The value

Why it's worth knowing

Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, so the only way to know is to test. One urine sample screens for six common sexually transmitted and genital organisms by PCR, so you know where you stand and can act on it.

Test entirely from home

No pathology collection centre, no clinic and no waiting room. The kit comes to you and goes back in the post.

No face-to-face appointment

Order online and collect your sample privately, without discussing your sexual health with anyone in person.

Simple urine collection

No needles, no swabs and no blood. A first-pass urine sample in the tube provided, taken at home in a few minutes.

Six PCR targets from one sample

Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Ureaplasma parvum, detected by PCR at a NATA-accredited Australian laboratory.

Discreet from start to finish

Plain packaging, private online ordering and results sent directly to you.

Clear, actionable results

Each target is reported as detected or not detected. If anything is detected, your report is ready to take to a doctor for treatment.

Your results

Results that are clear.

Detected or not detected, per target

Each of the six organisms is reported on its own line with a clear result, so there is nothing to interpret and no ambiguity about what was found.

Delivered privately

Your results are sent directly to you. You decide who sees them.

Ready for treatment if needed

If anything is detected, your laboratory report is the document a doctor needs to prescribe treatment, so you can go straight to that step.

What we test for

Six organisms. One urine sample.

PCR looks for the genetic material of each organism directly, which is the same method Australian pathology laboratories use for clinical STI screening.

Chlamydia trachomatis

The most commonly notified STI in Australia. Frequently present without any symptoms, and treatable with antibiotics once identified.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea)

A bacterial infection of the genital tract that can be carried without symptoms. Treatable once identified, and important to find early.

Mycoplasma genitalium

A bacterium increasingly recognised as a cause of urethritis and cervicitis. Not covered by a standard chlamydia and gonorrhoea check.

Mycoplasma hominis

A genital bacterium that can be part of normal flora but is associated with genital tract infection when present at higher levels.

Trichomonas vaginalis

A parasite that causes trichomoniasis, one of the most common non-viral STIs worldwide. Often has no symptoms, particularly in men.

Ureaplasma parvum

A common genital bacterium that is often present without causing problems, but can be associated with urethritis and other genital tract symptoms.

Descriptions are general information to help you read your results, not a diagnosis. This test screens urine for the six organisms listed. It does not test for herpes or syphilis. The Comprehensive At-Home STI Urine Test Kit checks for both from a urine sample by picking them up when they are present, which is why it works best when there is an active sore. A blood test is still the standard way to check for syphilis when there is no sore. HIV and hepatitis also require a blood test. A detected result should be followed up with a doctor for treatment.

How this differs from a clinic STI check

A clinic check is the right choice if you have symptoms or need a full screen including blood tests. For a private routine check, this does the same PCR testing without the appointment.

At-Home STI Urine Test FAQs

Six sexually transmitted and genital organisms from one urine sample: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea), Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Ureaplasma parvum. Each is detected by PCR and reported as detected or not detected.

Anyone who wants a private STI check without a clinic visit or a face-to-face conversation: after a new partner, before starting a new relationship, as a routine check, or simply for peace of mind. It is suitable for adults of any gender. If you have symptoms, or think you may have been exposed to HIV or syphilis, see a doctor or sexual health clinic for a full screen that includes blood tests.

The At-Home STI Urine Test Kit is $199.00, currently reduced from $249.00. That single price covers the collection kit, prepaid return postage, PCR laboratory testing of all six targets and your results sent directly to you. There is no consultation fee and no clinic visit to pay for.

You collect a first-pass urine sample at home in the tube provided, following the step-by-step instructions in the kit. First-pass means the first part of the stream, which carries the most cells from the urethra, so the kit explains how to time it. It takes a few minutes, with no needles and no swabs. Then post it back in the prepaid mailer.

Testing too early can miss an infection. As a general guide, chlamydia and gonorrhoea are reliably detectable about two weeks after exposure. If you test earlier and the result is not detected, a repeat test after the window period gives a more reliable answer.

Your results are sent directly to you once the laboratory has completed PCR analysis. You can view them privately from your phone or computer.

PCR on first-pass urine is a standard, laboratory-validated method for detecting these organisms and is what most clinics use for men and many use for women. For some organisms in women a vaginal swab can be slightly more sensitive, so if you have symptoms a clinic assessment is the right choice.

Your report will show clearly which organism was detected. Take it to your GP or a sexual health clinic, who can prescribe treatment, most of which is a short course of antibiotics. It is also important to let recent partners know so they can test too.

Yes. The kit arrives in plain packaging with nothing on the outside to identify its contents, you order online without speaking to anyone, and your results are sent directly to you.

No. It is a self-requested at-home test kit that you order online without a referral or appointment.

MediTests is a private, self-requested pathology service. The sample is self-collected at home and analysed by a NATA-accredited Australian laboratory. This test screens urine for six sexually transmitted and genital organisms by PCR and does not test for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis or herpes. A negative result does not rule out infection acquired within the window period. A detected result should be discussed with a doctor for treatment. Results are intended to support, not replace, the advice of your treating doctor. ABN 70 686 814 951.

At-Home STI Urine Test Kit

Getting tested for STIs shouldn’t have to mean booking a doctor’s appointment, discussing your sexual health face-to-face or sitting in a pathology collection centre.

The MediTests At-Home STI Test gives you a simple and discreet alternative.

The entire collection process can be completed privately from home using a urine sample. Your kit contains the materials and instructions required to collect your sample and return it for laboratory analysis.

There is no blood collection and no need to attend a pathology collection centre.

Your sample is analysed using PCR technology for six common sexually transmitted and genital organisms, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma genitalium.

If chlamydia is what you want to check, this at-home chlamydia test screens for it by PCR from a first-pass urine sample. Each organism is reported as detected or not detected, and anything detected is best taken to your GP or a sexual health clinic. This is a screening test, not a diagnosis.

Whether you’re testing after a new sexual partner, because of a possible exposure, experiencing symptoms, or simply want reassurance, this test provides a convenient way to take control of your sexual health without the usual barriers of in-person testing.

Need to screen for more organisms? Our Comprehensive At-Home STI Urine Test Kit checks 14 from one urine sample, including herpes simplex virus 1 and 2.

What we test for

  • Chlamydia trachomatis — A common bacterial sexually transmitted infection that frequently causes no symptoms but can lead to complications if left untreated.
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Gonorrhoea) — A bacterial STI that may cause discharge, pain or burning during urination, although some infections can be asymptomatic.
  • Mycoplasma genitalium — A sexually transmitted bacterium associated with urethritis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease and which may occur without obvious symptoms.
  • Mycoplasma hominis — A genital bacterium that can be present in the urogenital tract and may be associated with certain genitourinary infections.
  • Trichomonas vaginalis — A sexually transmitted parasite that can cause irritation, discharge and urinary symptoms, although infection may also occur without symptoms.
  • Ureaplasma parvum — A bacterium commonly found in the urogenital tract. Detection needs to be interpreted in the context of symptoms and clinical circumstances because its presence does not always indicate disease.
