The value

Why it's worth knowing

Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, so the only way to know is to test. One urine sample screens for 14 sexually transmitted, genital and genital ulcer-associated organisms by PCR, so you know where you stand and can act on it.

Comprehensive testing from home

Fourteen organisms from one sample, without a pathology collection centre, a clinic or a waiting room. The kit comes to you and goes back in the post.

No face-to-face appointment

Order online and collect your sample privately, without discussing your sexual health with anyone in person.

Simple urine collection

No needles, no swabs and no blood. A first-pass urine sample in the tube provided, taken at home in a few minutes.

Broad PCR testing

The eight common genital STIs, plus herpes simplex 1 and 2, syphilis, chancroid, CMV and varicella-zoster, detected by PCR at a NATA-accredited Australian laboratory.

Discreet from start to finish

Plain packaging, private online ordering and results sent directly to you.

Clear, actionable results

Each of the 14 targets is reported as detected or not detected. If anything is detected, your report is ready to take to a doctor for treatment.

Your results

Results that are clear.

Detected or not detected, per target

Each of the 14 organisms is reported on its own line with a clear result, so there is nothing to interpret and no ambiguity about what was found.

Delivered privately

Your results are sent directly to you. You decide who sees them.

Ready for treatment if needed

If anything is detected, your laboratory report is the document a doctor needs to prescribe treatment, so you can go straight to that step.

What we test for

Fourteen organisms. One urine sample.

PCR looks for the genetic material of each organism directly, the same method Australian pathology laboratories use for clinical STI screening. Two groups: the common genital STIs, and the organisms behind genital ulcers and viral infections.

Genital STIs 8 targets

Chlamydia trachomatis

The most commonly notified STI in Australia. Frequently present without any symptoms, and treatable with antibiotics once identified.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea)

A bacterial infection of the genital tract that can be carried without symptoms. Treatable once identified, and important to find early.

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

An invasive strain of chlamydia (serovar L) that is not distinguished by a standard chlamydia test and needs a longer course of treatment.

Mycoplasma genitalium

A bacterium increasingly recognised as a cause of urethritis and cervicitis. Not covered by a standard chlamydia and gonorrhoea check.

Mycoplasma hominis

A genital bacterium that can be part of normal flora but is associated with genital tract infection when present at higher levels.

Ureaplasma urealyticum

A genital bacterium more often associated with urethritis than its relative Ureaplasma parvum.

Ureaplasma parvum

A common genital bacterium that is often present without causing problems, but can be associated with urethritis and other genital tract symptoms.

Trichomonas vaginalis

A parasite that causes trichomoniasis, one of the most common non-viral STIs worldwide. Often has no symptoms, particularly in men.

Genital ulcer and viral organisms 6 targets

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)

Traditionally the cold sore virus, now a common cause of genital herpes. PCR detects the virus when it is being shed in the genital tract.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)

The virus most associated with recurrent genital herpes. PCR detects the virus when it is being shed, so testing during an outbreak is most informative.

Treponema pallidum (syphilis)

The bacterium that causes syphilis. Urine PCR detects it when it is present in the genital tract, such as during a primary sore. It does not replace a syphilis blood test.

Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid)

A bacterial cause of painful genital ulcers, uncommon in Australia but seen with overseas travel.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

A common virus that can be sexually transmitted and shed in the genital tract, often without symptoms.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)

The chickenpox and shingles virus, included because shingles in the genital area can be mistaken for herpes.

Descriptions are general information to help you read your results, not a diagnosis. PCR detects an organism that is present in the urine sample at the time of collection. For herpes and syphilis that means it is most informative when there is an active sore or outbreak, and a not-detected result does not rule out past or latent infection. This test does not include HIV or hepatitis, which require a blood test. A detected result should be followed up with a doctor for treatment.

How this differs from a clinic STI check

A clinic check is the right choice if you have symptoms or need blood tests for HIV and syphilis antibodies. For a private, broad urine screen, this covers more organisms than a standard check without the appointment.

Comprehensive STI Urine Test FAQs

Fourteen organisms from one urine sample, in two groups. Genital STIs: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea), Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Ureaplasma parvum and Trichomonas vaginalis. Genital ulcer and viral organisms: herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Each is detected by PCR and reported as detected or not detected.

The standard kit screens for six common genital organisms. The comprehensive kit adds LGV, Ureaplasma urealyticum and the six genital ulcer and viral organisms, including herpes simplex 1 and 2 and syphilis, for fourteen targets in total. If you want the broadest possible urine screen, or you have had a genital sore or ulcer, this is the one to choose.

PCR detects the genetic material of an organism that is present in the urine sample at the time of collection. For herpes and syphilis that means the test is most informative when there is an active sore, ulcer or outbreak, because that is when the organism is being shed into the genital tract. A not-detected result does not rule out a past or latent infection. A syphilis blood test, which looks for antibodies, is the standard way to check for syphilis when there is no sore, and we offer that separately.

No. HIV and hepatitis B and C require a blood test and are not part of this urine panel. If you want those included, see our blood STI tests or speak to a doctor or sexual health clinic.

Anyone who wants a broad, private STI check without a clinic visit: after a new partner, after unprotected sex, as a routine check, or if you have had a genital sore, blister or ulcer and want to know what caused it. It is suitable for adults of any gender. If you have symptoms, or think you may have been exposed to HIV, see a doctor or sexual health clinic as well.

The Comprehensive At-Home STI Urine Test Kit is $299.00. That single price covers the collection kit, prepaid return postage, PCR laboratory testing of all fourteen targets and your results sent directly to you. There is no consultation fee and no clinic visit to pay for.

You collect a first-pass urine sample at home in the tube provided, following the step-by-step instructions in the kit. First-pass means the first part of the stream, which carries the most cells from the urethra, so the kit explains how to time it. It takes a few minutes, with no needles and no swabs. Then post it back in the prepaid mailer.

Testing too early can miss an infection. As a general guide, chlamydia and gonorrhoea are reliably detectable about two weeks after exposure. Herpes and syphilis are best tested when a sore or blister is present. If you test early and the result is not detected, a repeat test after the window period gives a more reliable answer.

Your results are sent directly to you once the laboratory has completed PCR analysis. You can view them privately from your phone or computer.

Your report will show clearly which organism was detected. Take it to your GP or a sexual health clinic, who can prescribe treatment. Most bacterial infections are treated with a short course of antibiotics, and herpes can be managed with antiviral medication. It is also important to let recent partners know so they can test too.

Yes. The kit arrives in plain packaging with nothing on the outside to identify its contents, you order online without speaking to anyone, and your results are sent directly to you.

No. It is a self-requested at-home test kit that you order online without a referral or appointment.

MediTests is a private, self-requested pathology service. The sample is self-collected at home and analysed by a NATA-accredited Australian laboratory. This test screens urine for fourteen sexually transmitted, genital and genital ulcer-associated organisms by PCR and does not test for HIV or hepatitis. PCR detects organisms present in the sample at the time of collection; for herpes and syphilis it does not replace blood antibody testing, and a not-detected result does not rule out past or latent infection or infection acquired within the window period. A detected result should be discussed with a doctor for treatment. Results are intended to support, not replace, the advice of your treating doctor. ABN 70 686 814 951.

Comprehensive At-Home STI Urine Test Kit

For people who want broader STI testing without visiting a doctor, clinic or pathology collection centre, the MediTests Comprehensive At-Home STI Urine Test Kit provides an extensive PCR sexual health screen that can be collected entirely from home.

Everything required to collect your sample is included in your home testing kit. Simply collect your urine sample privately, return it as instructed and your sample will be analysed by the laboratory.

There are no needles, no blood collection and no pathology collection centre visit required.

This comprehensive profile screens for 14 sexually transmitted, genital and genital ulcer-associated organisms. It includes common infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma genitalium, as well as HSV-1, HSV-2, Treponema pallidum and several additional organisms.

The 14 organisms fall into two groups: eight genital STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea and lymphogranuloma venereum, and six genital ulcer and viral organisms, including herpes simplex virus 1 and 2. This is a screening test and does not diagnose a condition. If you only need to check the six most common organisms, see the standard at-home STI urine test kit.

It is ideal for people who want broader PCR testing while keeping the entire collection process private, simple and convenient.

No waiting rooms. No collection centre. No face-to-face appointment.

Order online, collect your sample privately at home, return it to the laboratory and receive your results securely.
