A very positive experience

Women’s Testosterone Therapy Check

Testosterone therapy for women is prescribed more often than it once was, and anyone on it needs periodic blood tests to track where their levels sit. Testing is also common before starting, to establish a baseline.

The Women’s Testosterone Therapy Check measures your total testosterone, the SHBG that determines how much of it is active, your calculated Free Androgen Index, and your oestradiol. Alongside those hormones it includes a full blood count, a full lipid profile and liver function tests, which are the general health markers usually monitored during androgen therapy.

This panel is designed to be repeated. Most women testing on therapy collect every six to twelve months, or as directed by their prescriber. Keeping your results in one place makes it far easier to see how your levels are tracking over time.

This is a laboratory blood test collected at an accredited collection centre. You order online, receive your pathology request form immediately, and attend any partner collection centre. Results are reviewed by a MediTests clinician and released to your secure account, usually within 24 to 48 hours of collection.

  • Total Testosterone: measures the total testosterone circulating in your blood, the primary marker tracked before and during testosterone therapy.
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin): the protein that binds testosterone and determines how much is biologically available, which can shift with therapy.
  • Free Androgen Index: a calculated ratio of testosterone to SHBG that indicates your active androgen level more accurately than total testosterone alone.
  • Oestradiol: the main form of oestrogen in women, measured because some testosterone converts to oestradiol in the body.
  • Full Blood Count: measures red cells, white cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit and platelets, a standard part of monitoring during androgen therapy.
  • Lipid Profile: measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides, which are routinely tracked alongside hormone therapy.
  • Liver Function Test: measures ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, bilirubin, albumin and protein to check how your liver is tracking.
