A very positive experience
I booked a blood test because my health insurance did not cover GP consultations. Low iron impairs dopamine function. Excess copper disrupts neurotransmitter balance. Thyroid dysfunction is routinely mistaken for ADHD. Magnesium and omega-3 deficiency are among the most consistent findings in people struggling with focus and cognitive performance. This panel identifies the underlying biology so you can address what’s actually driving your symptoms, whether or not a formal diagnosis is on the table.
What we test for
Ferritin (Iron Stores)
The most sensitive marker of iron status in the body. Iron is essential for dopamine transporter function — the same pathway targeted by ADHD medications. Low ferritin is one of the most consistent findings in people with attention difficulties, even when full blood count appears normal.
Zinc
Plays a direct role in dopamine and serotonin regulation and modulates the activity of neurotransmitter receptors involved in attention and impulse control. Deficiency is common and frequently overlooked in standard testing.
Copper (Serum)
Copper and zinc work in opposition. Elevated copper suppresses dopamine and noradrenaline, two neurotransmitters central to focus, motivation and executive function. High copper relative to zinc is a well-documented finding in people experiencing cognitive symptoms and mood dysregulation.
Magnesium
Required for hundreds of enzymatic processes including neurotransmitter synthesis, nerve transmission and stress regulation. Deficiency is strongly associated with poor sleep, anxiety, hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating — symptoms that overlap significantly with ADHD.
Vitamin D
Low vitamin D affects dopamine and serotonin production and has been independently associated with cognitive impairment, low mood and attention difficulties. Deficiency is widespread in Australia despite year-round sun exposure, particularly in those who work indoors.
TSH, Free T3 & Free T4
Thyroid dysfunction — both overactive and underactive — can produce symptoms nearly identical to ADHD: poor focus, restlessness, fatigue, brain fog and mood instability. Thyroid testing is an essential step before attributing cognitive symptoms to ADHD alone.
Homocysteine
Elevated homocysteine reflects impaired methylation — the biochemical process involved in neurotransmitter production, DNA repair and nervous system function. High levels are associated with cognitive decline, poor memory and mood disorders.
B12 & Folate
Both are essential for neurological function and neurotransmitter synthesis. Deficiency in either can cause fatigue, poor memory, low mood and cognitive slowing that is frequently mistaken for ADHD or depression.
