The value

Why it's worth knowing

Hair mineral analysis shows the levels of essential minerals and toxic elements your body has been holding over the past few months, and how they relate to each other. Use it to identify deficiencies, excess or toxic build-up, so you know what to correct.

Your essential mineral status

Which of your essential minerals are low, adequate or high against the reference range, read from what your body has laid down over the past one to three months rather than a single moment.

Any toxic metal build-up

Whether aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel, silver or tin have accumulated from water, food, cookware, workplaces and the environment, and to what degree.

Eight essential minerals

Calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, chromium, manganese and selenium. The minerals behind energy production, enzyme function, immunity and metabolism.

Eleven mineral ratios

Zinc to copper, calcium to magnesium and nine more. Minerals compete and cooperate, so the relationship between two of them is often more telling than either level on its own.

What that means for how your body is running

Mineral ratios reflect how well processes are being supported, from nerve signalling and digestion to hormone production, so you see where the balance is off, not just what is high or low.

No needles, no clinic

A small snip of hair from the back of the head, taken at home in a couple of minutes and posted back in a prepaid envelope. One of the easiest ways to test various minerals and trace elements in the body.

Your results

Results that actually make sense.

Quantified against a reference range

Every element and every ratio is reported with its measured level and the reference range beside it, so you can see at a glance what is high, what is low and what is comfortably normal.

Written commentary on anything flagged

For each element outside range the laboratory adds a plain-language note: what it does in the body, what a hair level like yours can indicate, and what is worth looking into next.

Yours to keep and share

The full report is delivered to your secure portal. Keep it, print it, or hand it to your GP, naturopath or nutritionist to guide next steps.

What we measure

A full read on your minerals and metals.

Sixteen elements and eleven ratios, measured from one small hair sample by ICP-MS, so you see what has accumulated, how it compares to the reference range, and how your minerals sit relative to each other.

Eight minerals your body cannot make and must absorb from food. Hair levels reflect longer-term tissue status rather than what happens to be circulating today.

Calcium

Bone, nerve and muscle function. Hair calcium reflects longer-term tissue deposition and can shift with diet, absorption and hormonal factors.

Magnesium

Involved in more than 300 enzyme reactions, including energy production, muscle relaxation and sleep. One of the most commonly depleted minerals.

Zinc

Immune function, skin, wound healing and hormone production. One of the most useful hair markers, and always read alongside copper.

Iron

Oxygen transport and energy. Hair iron gives a tissue-level view rather than a substitute for blood ferritin.

Copper

Iron metabolism, antioxidant enzymes and connective tissue. Copper and zinc compete, so the pair is reported as a ratio as well.

Chromium

Supports insulin action and glucose metabolism. Low levels are associated with diets high in refined carbohydrate.

Manganese

Bone formation, antioxidant defence and carbohydrate metabolism.

Selenium

Thyroid hormone conversion and antioxidant protection. Australian soils are commonly low in selenium.

Eight metals with no useful role in the body that accumulate in tissue over time. Hair is particularly suited to showing repeated or long-term exposure rather than a single recent event.

Mercury

Large predatory fish, dental amalgam and some workplaces. Hair mercury is one of the most established hair biomarkers, especially for dietary methylmercury.

Lead

Old paint, older plumbing, some imported goods and hobbies. There is no safe level; hair shows accumulated exposure.

Arsenic

Contaminated water, rice, seafood and some supplements. Hair reflects repeated or ongoing exposure.

Cadmium

Tobacco smoke, some shellfish and industrial exposure. Accumulates with a very long half-life in the body.

Aluminium

Cookware, antiperspirants, some medications and processed foods. Builds up in tissue over time.

Nickel

Jewellery, stainless steel and some foods. A common contact sensitiser.

Silver

Colloidal silver products and some medical and industrial sources.

Tin

Canned foods, some plastics and industrial exposure.

Minerals compete and cooperate. A ratio between two of them often says more than either level alone, which is why the report calculates eleven of them.

Zinc / Copper

The most-referenced hair ratio. The two compete for absorption, so a low ratio can point to copper dominance even when zinc looks acceptable.

Calcium / Magnesium

Both are needed for muscle and nerve function and each affects the other. Read together for a clearer picture than either alone.

Calcium / Copper

Relationship between calcium deposition and copper accumulation.

Calcium / Iron

How calcium and iron sit relative to each other; high calcium can affect iron absorption.

Calcium / Zinc

Balance between calcium and zinc tissue levels.

Iron / Copper

Copper is required to move iron around the body, so the pair is reported together.

Iron / Manganese

Two minerals that share absorption pathways and can displace each other.

Zinc / Chromium

Relationship between zinc and chromium status.

Zinc / Iron

Balance between two minerals that compete for absorption.

Zinc / Magnesium

Balance between zinc and magnesium tissue levels.

Zinc / Manganese

Balance between zinc and manganese tissue levels.

Marker descriptions are general explanations to help you read your report, not a diagnosis. Hair analysis reflects tissue accumulation over the period of hair growth and is interpreted alongside your history, diet and exposure.

Hair Mineral Analysis FAQs

Hair mineral analysis measures the minerals and toxic metals that have been incorporated into your hair as it grew. Because hair is laid down over time and does not change once it has formed, a small sample gives a retrospective view of your essential mineral balance and any accumulated toxic metal exposure over roughly the past one to three months. This test measures eight essential minerals, eight toxic metals and eleven mineral ratios.

Anyone who wants a longer-term view of their mineral status than a single blood draw gives. Anyone who suspects exposure to heavy metals through diet, water, work, hobbies, older housing or dental amalgam. And anyone who simply wants a baseline of their minerals and metals without a needle.

Hair Mineral Analysis (Basic) is $299.00, currently reduced from $315.00. That single price covers the at-home collection kit, prepaid return postage, ICP-MS laboratory analysis of 16 elements and 11 ratios, and your full report.

You take it yourself at home. A small amount of hair is cut from the back of the head, as close to the scalp as possible, following the step-by-step instructions in the kit. It takes a couple of minutes, involves no needles, and posts back in the prepaid return mailer. Chemically treated or dyed hair can affect some results; the instructions cover how to handle this.

Your full report is delivered to your secure portal once the laboratory has completed analysis. You can read it yourself or share it with your GP, naturopath or nutritionist to guide next steps.

A blood test shows what is circulating in your bloodstream on the day it is taken, which the body regulates tightly. Hair reflects what has been deposited in tissue over the period of hair growth, so it is better suited to longer-term patterns and to accumulated exposure to toxic metals, which blood tests rarely include. The two answer different questions and are often used together.

You don't need a GP referral. It is a self-requested at-home test kit that you can get online, with no referral or appointment.

Hair analysis on its own cannot diagnose a deficiency or metal poisoning. It reflects tissue accumulation over the period of hair growth and is not a standalone diagnostic tool. It is interpreted alongside your history, diet and likely exposures. Where a toxic metal is significantly elevated, the report recommends confirmatory testing in an appropriate sample such as urine and further clinical assessment.

Every element outside the reference range is flagged clearly on the report, with written commentary from the laboratory explaining what it does, what an elevated hair level can indicate, and the most common sources of exposure to look at first. Anything that needs follow up should be taken to your GP or practitioner.

MediTests is a private, self-requested pathology service. The sample is self-collected at home and analysed by a specialist Australian laboratory. Hair mineral analysis reflects the accumulation of minerals and metals in hair over the period of hair growth and is not a standalone diagnostic tool for deficiency, toxicity or disease. Results are intended to support, not replace, the advice of your treating doctor, and may lead to further investigation. ABN 70 686 814 951.

Hair Mineral Analysis (Basic)

The Hair Mineral Analysis (Basic) is a hair mineral analysis test, also known as an HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) test, that uses a small hair sample to reveal how minerals and metals have accumulated in your body over the past one to three months. This longer-term window is what makes hair analysis different from a blood test, which captures a single moment.

By analysing your hair, it reflects mineral balance and potential toxic metal exposure over time, helping uncover hidden imbalances that may affect energy, metabolism, hormones and overall wellbeing. It is a useful starting point for anyone interested in a longer-term view of their nutrient and exposure status.

For a more detailed version, the Hair Mineral Analysis (Advanced) covers a wider range of elements. If you are comparing heavy metal test options, the Heavy Metal Analysis uses a 24-hour urine collection instead of hair, and the Essential Mineral Analysis looks at essential minerals from a 24-hour urine collection. For a current blood-based mineral picture, the Complete Heavy Metal & Mineral Screen is an option. You can also create your own blood test.

The Hair Mineral Analysis is an at-home heavy metal testing kit and mineral test in one, needing no GP referral and no appointment. Your kit is delivered to you, you collect a small hair sample at home and return it, and your results follow. For more on minerals and health, Healthdirect Australia is a useful reference.

What we test for

Our Hair Mineral Analysis Test measures both nutrient minerals and potentially harmful metal content in a small hair sample, giving you a picture of what has been accumulating in your system over the past 1–3 months. Hair is an ideal testing medium because minerals and metals become “fixed” as your hair grows, reflecting longer-term exposure and status rather than just a moment in time.

This test assesses a range of essential minerals that play key roles in cellular function and metabolism, as well as toxic metals that can build up from environmental exposure. Heavy metals can interfere with multiple body systems, including cardiovascular, immune, neurological, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and skin health.

By understanding both your mineral status and toxic metal exposure, you gain valuable insight into underlying imbalances that may be affecting your wellbeing and resilience.

Reasons to get this test

  • The essential hair mineral and toxic metal screen Tests the core toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, aluminium, nickel) alongside the key nutritional minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, chromium). The foundational hair test at an accessible price.
  • 2-3 months of mineral exposure in one sample Hair grows about 1cm per month and locks minerals into the strand as it forms. A 3cm sample reveals your patterns over the last quarter, not just today. A longer-term view than a single blood test.
  • Where toxic metals come from Mercury from fish and seafood. Aluminium from cookware and antiperspirants. Arsenic from rice and groundwater. Cadmium from tobacco and air pollution. Hair analysis reflects longer-term accumulation that a single blood test may not show.
  • The essential minerals behind energy and immunity Calcium and magnesium for nervous system and muscle function. Zinc for testosterone, skin and immune health. Copper for collagen and iron. Selenium for thyroid conversion. Chromium for blood sugar.
  • The right starting point before deeper testing If you suspect mineral imbalance or environmental metal exposure, this is the affordable first step. Upgrade to the Hair Mineral Analysis (Advanced) (35+ elements with ratios) for the comprehensive functional read.
  • A simple at-home hair collection kit Order online, snip a small hair sample at home using the provided kit, post back in the pre-paid envelope. No clinic, no blood draw, no appointment.
