The value

Why it's worth knowing

The thyroid hormone most never test

Reverse T3 is the inactive form of T3 that the body produces under stress. Elevated Reverse T3 explains why some people feel hypothyroid despite normal TSH.

Behind “I feel hypothyroid but my tests are normal”

A common scenario: TSH, FT3 and FT4 are normal but symptoms persist. Reverse T3 reveals whether the body is converting T4 to the inactive form instead.

Elevated by chronic stress, illness, calorie restriction and overtraining

Reverse T3 rises when the body is in protective mode. Major stress, prolonged illness, severe dieting and overtraining all push it up.

The marker behind unexplained fatigue and weight gain

When standard thyroid markers look normal but you feel hypothyroid, Reverse T3 often holds the answer. Particularly relevant for women with cycle changes too.

Pairs with TSH, FT3, FT4 and thyroid antibodies

Reverse T3 alone tells part of the story. Tested alongside the full thyroid panel, it reveals where the conversion problem lies.

FAQs

Common questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

Through your GP, blood tests are typically only covered by Medicare when they're medically warranted. Medicare covers testing because a condition justifies it, not because you want to be proactive or just want to know certain things. You can't just walk in and ask for a panel of biomarkers because you're curious or want a baseline. Your doctor decides which markers get tested, and that list is usually limited.

MediTests is for people who want to take a proactive approach to their health. Deep insights, a personal baseline, and the exact markers you want to track over time. You're in full control. It's your data. No condition required, no waiting room, no eligibility hurdles.

You can get any test you want, with over 300 blood tests across 16 categories. We never refuse a blood test.

You also get your original lab report back in 24 to 48 hours, sent straight to your inbox. No follow-up consult, no appointment to book, and nothing linked to My Health Record or Medicare. Completely private.

Same NATA-accredited labs GPs and hospitals use. Same accuracy. None of the waiting.
No GP consult or telehealth appointment needed. We instantly generate your pathology request form and send it directly to your inbox after checkout.

If you would like one, we also offer private doctor consultations as an optional extra, for people who want private blood test results and a private consult to discuss them.
As simple as it gets:
  1. Choose your test online. Your pathology request form arrives in your inbox instantly.
  2. Walk into any of our 3,300+ collection centres. No appointment needed.
  3. Results delivered securely to your inbox in 24 to 48 hours.
Most tests need no fasting at all. Some markers, like fasting glucose, fasting insulin and certain cholesterol panels, give the most accurate reading after fasting. If your test needs it, it's stated on the product page and on your pathology request form. Water is always fine.
No, never. Nothing is linked to My Health Record or Medicare. Your results are completely private and confidential: they're sent securely to your email, and only you decide who sees them. Many of our customers choose MediTests for exactly this reason, and we take that privacy seriously.
100%. We partner with NATA-accredited Australian laboratories, the same trusted labs used by hospitals and GPs across the country. Every result is processed to the same clinical standards as your local pathology centre.
Never. The price you see includes everything: your pathology request form, testing, processing and results. No surprises.
The most common reason is that something feels off but a standard GP panel hasn't turned anything up. Fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, low mood, poor recovery, irregular cycles and low libido all have measurable biological causes that a targeted panel can identify.

You don't need symptoms to benefit from testing. Proactive testing establishes your personal baseline, catches risk factors before they cause harm, and helps you understand whether diet, training or lifestyle changes are actually working.
Yes, absolutely. You can build your own panel by choosing from our wide range of individual tests. Whether you're checking one thing or a combination of markers, you're in control of what you get tested for. Visit our Create Your Own Test page to start building.

About this test

Questions about the Reverse T3 Blood Test

Extra answers specific to this test.

Reverse T3 can rise during acute illness, fasting, or significant physical stress, so results are best interpreted with your doctor alongside standard thyroid markers. It is not part of routine thyroid assessment under current Australian clinical guidance, which centres on TSH, Free T4 and Free T3.

This test measures Reverse T3, an inactive by-product of thyroid hormone metabolism. Some practitioners use it as an additional marker alongside standard thyroid testing, though it is not part of standard Australian thyroid function testing, which centres on TSH, Free T4 and Free T3.

No fasting is required, though as noted above, illness, fasting and stress can all affect the result, which is a separate consideration from test-day preparation.

No – after you order online you’ll receive a pathology request form by email straight away, which you can take to any partner collection centre without booking ahead. Results are typically available within 12 to 48 hours, delivered securely to your email.

Hundreds of Australians have skipped the referral and the waiting, and taken control of their health with MediTests.

A very positive experience

I booked a blood test because my health insurance did not cover GP consultations. The referral form was emailed to me immediately, I walked into a collection centre the next morning and my results arrived the very next day. One result showed an elevated TSH level and because I was pregnant, a doctor from their Sydney office personally called me to talk it through. It made me feel they genuinely cared.

Could not have been better

I've been in remission from Graves Disease for a few years and suddenly had symptoms again. It was easy to choose and purchase the test I needed at a reasonable price and set up the appointment online for the next day. The lab tech was friendly and put me entirely at ease, and the results were delivered electronically within a day or two. Could not have been better.

Reverse T3 Blood Test

The Reverse T3 Blood Test measures reverse T3, an inactive form of thyroid hormone that the body produces when it converts T4. As a reverse t3 blood test it is a more advanced thyroid marker, generally used alongside a standard thyroid panel rather than on its own, when thyroid symptoms persist despite seemingly normal results.

Reverse T3 can rise during periods of stress, illness, fasting or significant physiological strain, when the body shifts away from the active thyroid hormone. Looking at reverse T3 alongside the active hormones can add useful context for people investigating ongoing fatigue or thyroid-related symptoms.

This is best interpreted with a full thyroid picture, so the Full Thyroid Check covering TSH, FT3, FT4 and antibodies is a useful companion, and the Thyroid Function Test is the simple first step. You can also create your own blood test.

The Reverse T3 Blood Test needs no GP referral and no appointment, so you can get your blood test online and walk into any of 3,300+ collection centres across Australia, with results in 24 to 48 hours. For more on thyroid health, Healthdirect Australia is a useful reference.
