A very positive experience

Could not have been better

Hormones are frequently part of that picture, particularly androgens such as testosterone and DHEAS, and the proteins that control how much of those hormones are active in your body.

The Hormonal Acne Profile measures eight hormones commonly assessed when acne is thought to have a hormonal component. It looks at your androgen levels, the sex hormone binding globulin that determines how much testosterone is freely available, your oestradiol, and prolactin, which can influence androgen activity when elevated.

This is a laboratory blood test collected at an accredited collection centre, not a home kit. You order online, receive your pathology request form immediately, and attend any partner collection centre at a time that suits you. Your results are reviewed by a MediTests clinician and released to your secure account, usually within 24 to 48 hours of collection.

Cycle timing matters for accurate hormone measurement. If you have regular periods, we recommend collection on day 2 to 5 of your cycle unless you have been advised otherwise. Bring your results to your GP or dermatologist to discuss what they mean for you.

  • Total Testosterone: measures the total amount of testosterone circulating in your blood, the primary androgen assessed when acne is thought to be hormonally driven.
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin): the protein that binds testosterone and controls how much of it is biologically available to your tissues.
  • Free Androgen Index: a calculated ratio of testosterone to SHBG that gives a clearer picture of your active androgen levels than testosterone alone.
  • DHEAS: an androgen produced mainly by the adrenal glands, measured to understand whether adrenal androgens are contributing to the overall picture.
  • LH (Luteinising Hormone): a pituitary hormone that regulates ovulation and influences ovarian androgen production.
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone): works alongside LH to regulate the ovarian cycle, and is assessed together with LH to understand ovarian hormone patterns.
  • Oestradiol: the main form of oestrogen in women of reproductive age, measured to understand the balance between oestrogen and androgens.
  • Prolactin: a pituitary hormone that, when elevated, can affect ovarian function and androgen levels.
