A very positive experience

Hair shedding and thinning in women has several measurable contributors, and low iron stores is one of the most common. Ferritin can be low enough to affect hair while your haemoglobin still reads as normal, which is why a standard full blood count on its own often comes back reassuring and leaves you no further along.

The Hair Loss Blood Test measures ferritin and full iron studies alongside a full blood count. It includes complete thyroid function with TSH, Free T4 and Free T3, since thyroid conditions commonly affect hair and are several times more common in women. It also measures the androgen markers most relevant to female pattern hair thinning: total testosterone, SHBG, the calculated Free Androgen Index and DHEAS.

That combination covers the three areas usually assessed together when hair loss is investigated, which is more useful than testing any one of them in isolation.

  • Full Blood Count: measures red cells, white cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit and platelets.
  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): the pituitary hormone that signals your thyroid, and the standard first line thyroid marker.
  • Free T4 (Free Thyroxine): measures the available form of the main hormone your thyroid produces.
  • Free T3 (Free Triiodothyronine): measures the active thyroid hormone your tissues use.
  • Total Testosterone: measures circulating testosterone, the primary androgen assessed in female pattern hair thinning.
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin): the protein that binds testosterone and determines how much is biologically available.
  • Free Androgen Index: a calculated ratio of testosterone to SHBG showing your active androgen level.
  • DHEAS: an adrenal androgen measured alongside testosterone for a fuller androgen picture.
