The value

Why it's worth knowing

The standard inflammation marker

CRP rises with infection, injury, autoimmune flare-ups and acute illness. The most commonly ordered inflammation test in clinical practice.

Useful for tracking infection or flare-ups

For known autoimmune conditions or recurring infections, CRP tracks whether inflammation is rising or settling over time.

Less sensitive than hs-CRP for cardiovascular risk

CRP detects acute inflammation only. For chronic low-grade cardiovascular inflammation, hs-CRP is the better marker.

Often elevated in untreated obesity and metabolic syndrome

Chronic inflammation drives much of the damage in obesity and metabolic dysfunction. CRP confirms when this is happening.

Best paired with hs-CRP and FBC for full inflammation picture

CRP alone catches the broad picture. hs-CRP adds cardiovascular precision and FBC adds white cell patterns for the full read.

Common questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

No GP consult or telehealth appointment needed. We instantly generate your pathology referral and send it directly to your inbox after checkout.
You can order any test you want without the gatekeeping.

Through your GP, blood tests are typically only bulk-billed under Medicare if you have a specific medical condition that justifies them. You can't just walk in and ask for a panel because you're curious or want a baseline. Your doctor decides which markers get tested, and that list is usually limited.

MediTests is for people who want to take a more proactive approach to their health. Whether you're looking for deeper insights, want to establish a personal baseline, or simply choose exactly which markers you want to track, you're in control. No condition required, no waiting room, no Medicare eligibility hurdles.

Never. The price you see includes everything: referral, testing, processing and results. No surprises.
The most common reason is that something feels off but a standard GP panel hasn't turned anything up. Fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, low mood, poor recovery, irregular cycles and low libido all have measurable biological causes that a targeted panel can identify.

You don't need symptoms to benefit from testing. Proactive testing establishes your personal baseline, catches risk factors before they cause harm, and helps you understand whether diet, training or lifestyle changes are actually working.
Yes, absolutely. You can build your own panel by choosing from our wide range of individual tests. Whether you're checking one thing or a combination of markers, you're in control of what you get tested for. Visit our Create Your Own Test page to start building.

A very positive experience

I booked a blood test because my health insurance did not cover GP consultations. The referral form was emailed to me immediately, I walked into a collection centre the next morning and my results arrived the very next day. One result showed an elevated TSH level and because I was pregnant, a doctor from their Sydney office personally called me to talk it through. It made me feel they genuinely cared.

Could not have been better

I've been in remission from Graves Disease for a few years and suddenly had symptoms again. It was easy to choose and purchase the test I needed at a reasonable price and set up the appointment online for the next day. The lab tech was friendly and put me entirely at ease, and the results were delivered electronically within a day or two. Could not have been better.

CRP Blood Test

A CRP (C-reactive protein) blood test measures the amount of C-reactive protein in your blood. CRP is a substance your liver produces in response to inflammation, so the test gives a clear, objective signal of whether inflammation is present in the body and roughly how much.

What does a CRP test measure?

CRP rises within hours of inflammation starting and falls again once it settles, which makes it a fast, responsive marker. It reflects inflammation from many sources, including infection, injury, and chronic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. On its own a CRP result does not identify the cause, but it tells you whether an inflammatory process is active and gives a baseline you can track over time.

What is a normal CRP level?

A normal CRP result generally sits below 5 mg/L, though the exact reference range varies slightly between laboratories. Levels between roughly 5 and 10 mg/L suggest mild inflammation, while higher readings point to a more significant inflammatory response, such as an active infection. Your result will always show the laboratory’s own reference range next to your reading.

What does a high CRP level mean?

A high CRP confirms that inflammation is present but does not explain where it is coming from. Common reasons include bacterial or viral infection, recent injury or surgery, and flare-ups of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease. Because the marker is non-specific, a raised result is best interpreted alongside your symptoms, history and any other test results.

What can cause CRP to be raised?

Beyond infection and injury, CRP can rise with ongoing low-grade inflammation linked to factors such as obesity, smoking and chronic stress on the body. Temporary increases can also follow intense exercise. This is why a single reading is most useful when considered in context, and why repeat testing can be more informative than a one-off number.

CRP vs hs-CRP: what is the difference?

Standard CRP is designed to detect moderate to high inflammation, which makes it well suited to infection and flare-ups. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) measures much lower concentrations and is used mainly to help assess long-term cardiovascular risk, where small, persistent elevations matter. They measure the same protein, just at different sensitivities for different purposes. If cardiovascular risk is your focus, the hs-CRP test is the more relevant choice.

How is the test done?

CRP is measured from a standard blood sample taken from a vein in your arm. No fasting or special preparation is needed, and the result is reported as a single number in mg/L.

What we test for
