A very positive experience
I booked a blood test because my health insurance did not cover GP consultations. What we test for
Fasting Glucose
Measures blood sugar at the time of collection after an overnight fast. The standard first-line screening marker for diabetes, but an insensitive early indicator — glucose often remains normal while insulin resistance is already well established.
HbA1c
Reflects average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. More reliable than a single glucose reading for assessing long-term blood sugar control and identifying pre-diabetes before it becomes type 2 diabetes.
Fasting Insulin
The most important marker in this panel for detecting early insulin resistance. Insulin rises long before glucose does as the pancreas compensates for cells becoming less responsive. Elevated fasting insulin with normal glucose is the hallmark of early-stage insulin resistance.
HOMA-IR (Calculated)
Derived from fasting glucose and fasting insulin, HOMA-IR is the standard calculated index for estimating insulin resistance. A single number that summarises how hard your pancreas is working to keep blood sugar in range.
Triglycerides
Elevated triglycerides are one of the earliest and most reliable indicators of metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance. Closely linked to dietary carbohydrate intake and liver fat accumulation.
HDL Cholesterol
Low HDL is a consistent feature of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. The combination of high triglycerides and low HDL is a more sensitive early indicator of metabolic risk than LDL or total cholesterol alone.
High-Sensitivity CRP (hsCRP)
A marker of systemic low-grade inflammation. Chronically elevated in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, and independently associated with cardiovascular risk. Often elevated years before a formal diabetes diagnosis.
Uric Acid
Strongly associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and fructose metabolism. Elevated uric acid is an independent risk factor for gout, kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, and rises in parallel with worsening insulin resistance.
