A very positive experience
I booked a blood test because my health insurance did not cover GP consultations. What we test for
Sperm Analysis: Assesses sperm count, motility (movement) and morphology (shape), the three parameters that determine whether sperm can successfully fertilise an egg. Abnormalities in any one of these can significantly reduce fertility even when hormone levels appear normal.
FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone): Sent from the pituitary gland to stimulate sperm production in the testes. Elevated FSH in men is a sign that the brain is working harder to drive sperm production because testicular function is impaired. It is one of the most reliable indirect indicators of sperm production capacity.
LH (Luteinising Hormone): The pituitary signal that drives testosterone production in the testes. Low LH alongside low testosterone indicates the problem originates in the brain or pituitary rather than the testes, a distinction that completely changes the clinical approach.
Testosterone (Total): Testosterone is directly required for sperm production. Low testosterone impairs spermatogenesis regardless of other hormonal markers and is a common and treatable contributor to male fertility issues.
Prolactin: When prolactin is elevated it suppresses both LH and testosterone, reducing sperm production as a result. Elevated prolactin is one of the most frequently missed hormonal causes of male fertility problems and is not included in most standard hormone panels.
